Global entertainment giant Walt Disney Co has interrupted the creative and design work for its Hong Kong theme park and will dismiss more than 30 employees there, sources reported.
The Hong Kong SAR government, which holds a 57% stake in the theme park, earlier told the media that it had not worked out an expansion schedule for the theme park. Disney has not reached an agreement with the local government on the expansion plan.
Leslie Goodman, executive vice president of worldwide public affairs for Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, yesterday said the cessation of creative and design work on the project was motivated by uncertainty.
Meanwhile, the Commerce and Economic Development Bureau of Hong Kong sent an email expressing grave concern about the decision and urged the company to reconsider.
Last month, Disney and the Shanghai municipal government submitted a plan to the Chinese government for a theme park in Shanghai that would cost RMB 24.48 billion and could open as early as 2014. A stake of 43% in the park will be held by Disney, according to an earlier report of China Knowledge.
