Shanghai has two international airports something no other city in China can boast. The Pu
dong International Airport handles 60% of flights including most flights from all over the world, while the remaining 40% use Hongqiao International Airport.
Shanghai Pudong Airport
Shanghai Pudong International Airport is located in the east of Shanghai, covering an area of 40 km, about 30 km away from the city center, and about 40 km away from Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport.
Project Phase I of Shanghai Pudong International Airport started officially in Oct. 1997 and completed in Sep. 1999. Project Phase I has one 4E South-north runway (4000m×60m), two parallel taxiways, 800,000 m2 apron, seventy-six aircraft positions, 50,000m2 cargo warehouse, and also equipped with the system of navigation, communication, surveillance, weathering and logistics service etc. It is capable of providing 24-hour round service.
Shanghai Maglev Train operates between Pudong International Airport and Longyang Road Metro Station in Pudong New District, every day from 7:00 to 21:00 at intervals of 15 minutes. The whole journey takes only eight minutes. The charge is CNY 50 one-way (economic) and CNY 100 for VIP, CNY 80 round-trip (economic) and CNY 160 for VIP. You can buy a one-way ticket at a preferential price of CNY 40 if you have an intraday air ticket.
A taxi costs approximately CNY 150 from Pudong International Airport to the People's Square, the center of Shanghai, and it takes about 50 minutes.
Shanghai Hongqiao Airport
Location: Hongqiao International Airport is situated in the western outskirts of Shanghai, about 13 kilometers (about 8 miles) from downtown area and more than 40 kilometers (about 25 miles) from Pudong International Airport.
Brief intro: Being the first civilian airport in Shanghai, Hongqiao International Airport is more than eighty years old. After a series of renovations it has become one of the three international air transit centers in China.
Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport has one runway (3400m * 57.6m ) and one taxiway, about 486,000 m2 apron and a total of 66 aircraft positions. Its advanced infrastructure facilities and various navigation, communication and security systems can accommodate all kinds of airplanes in the world.
The terminal of Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport covers an area of 82,000 m2 , with 15 waiting halls, 18 VIP lounge and 15 luggage-conveying belts. Currently, HongqiaoInternationalAirport accommodates an average of over 300 aircraft movements per day, and safe operation is better guaranteed.
